Housing colleagues at top of Pen y Fan

A group of colleagues from our Housing and Support directorate, led by Alison Clements our Head of Housing, recently walked up Pen y Fan to raise money for our nominated charity, Trussell Trust.

The charity supports a nationwide network of food banks and provides emergency food and support to people locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.

Between 1 April 2022 and 30 September 2022, food banks in the Trussell Trust’s UK-wide network distributed 1.3 million food parcels to people facing hardship – this is an increase of 52% compared to the same period in 2019. Half a million of these parcels were distributed to children.

Following a discussion on ideas for team building and fundraising, Tom Jackson, neighbourhood housing coach, suggested walking up the highest peak in south Wales, Pen y Fan. There was lots of support for this idea and a real passion for raising sponsorship for the Trussell Trust so a group of colleagues met up together to start planning.

This was a real team effort from the beginning with people from a range of Hafod teams lending their support in any way they could. From setting up the JustGiving donation page and making an equipment list to completing a risk assessment, arranging transport and planning the walking route.

On the day, the sun was shining and the group set off from Storey Arms and reached the summit within two hours.

At the time of publishing, we have raised an amazing £2,654 for the Trussell Trust!

Speaking after the event, Alison Clements, Head of Housing, said: “I want to thank every single colleague who took part – what an amazing team effort and I am looking forward to our next challenge!

“A big thank you to everyone who has donated, especially to our contractor partners including Kestral Construction, Willis Construction, Concept Fire & Electrical, Strongs Partnership Ltd and Hale Construction whose generous donations helped us smash our target of £1,000.”
