Tŷ Cwm provides an accommodation option to people over 50 in the Merthyr area supporting independence in later life, or where physical disability or sensory impairment impacts on their ability to take an active role in their community.
Extra Care can be a viable alternative to sheltered accommodation or residential care by encouraging independent living, and providing a home with care and support services that can increase or decrease as the individual’s needs change. It is suitable for single people or couples, where one or both need more supportive accommodation.
Tŷ Cwm has 60 self-contained apartments offering a mixture of one bed and two bedrooms. All accommodation is available for rent on an assured tenancy basis and is built to a high specification, including full wheelchair accessibility.
To be eligible to apply for a tenancy at Tŷ Cwm you will need to live in Merthyr Tydfil or have a close connection with the area, and be over 50 years of age. You must also be in one of the following situations:
- In hospital
- In a residential home or sheltered housing
- In a vulnerable situation at home
- Unable to cope with essential living tasks

Tenants are supported by a local community alarm service to contact the manager, care teams and support colleagues on-site during normal hours of operation and the ‘lifeline’ call centre in the Civic Centre out-of-hours. Domiciliary Care colleagues are available on site 24 hours a day to help with personal care and give support to tenants who have emergencies.
