Previously the location of the 100-year-old fire-damaged hospital, the site is being revitalised to provide much-needed affordable homes and public spaces to Canton. In total, 106 homes will be built, including 44 two, three and four-bedroom houses and 62 one and two-bedroom apartments split over three buildings; while the former doctor’s house has been ear-marked as a community space.

In addition, the homes are being built to high energy efficiency standards, with Hafod committed to tackling the climate crisis and recognising its role in making positive changes to reduce its carbon emissions, such as retrofitting existing homes and ensuring all new build homes are low emission.

Jeremy Miles said:

“The nation I want to lead is one where everyone has a chance to prosper. A decent home in a well-connected community should be a fundamental expectation of modern life. So if I'm elected Welsh Labour Leader and First Minister, housing will be one of my top priorities.

“I want Wales to be a nation of thriving communities, where people can afford to live and work. So a Welsh Government I lead will make it a priority to build more homes, free up land to support house building, make rents fairer, support people to rent or buy their own home, and maintain a sharp focus on ensuring we do everything in our power to prevent homelessness.

“I also want to help young people make their futures here in Wales. So we will do all we can to support them to live and work in Wales, by making it easier for them to find a place to live in their local communities, and help create the new jobs in the new sectors of the future.”
“That’s part of the vision I have for Wales’ future.”

Neil Taylor, Head of Development at Hafod, said:

“At Hafod, we believe in building communities and making connections, and we’re passionate about creating affordable homes for people in Wales.

“We're committed to ensuring these homes are low carbon and enjoyable to live in, with easy access to community facilities and local amenities.

“We’re delighted to have shown Jeremy Miles MS around the former Lansdowne Hospital site today, as the 106 homes being created will provide much needed affordable housing in the area.

“By taking a fabric first approach, prioritising the energy efficiency of the development from inception, the homes have been built with high levels of insulation, helping to minimise energy consumption. They will be EPC A rated and all electric, contributing to the decarbonisation of housing in Wales.

“The impact of the cost-of-living crisis demonstrates just how important it is to have a home that is affordable to live in, and we hope that these homes will support people to live happy, healthy lives.”

Gemma Clissett, regional partnerships director at Lovell, said:

“It was our pleasure to welcome the Minister to the Lansdowne development. This scheme is incredibly important to us at Lovell, as we are very proud to be transforming this brownfield site into a vibrant new community.

“We have been working in the affordable housing sector for many decades, and are committed to providing local people with much needed, high quality housing. It was a pleasure to speak about our passion with the Minister, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with Hafod and Welsh Government to make this development the best it can be.”
